Dog Training Activities with Angus MacFarlane
I’m Angus MacFarlane. I have been running Pet Dog and Agility training sessions at Home Farm for a number of years.
I’m an Agility Club Approved Instructor (Level 7), coached by Natasha Wise, who is Great Britain’s most successful agility competitor of all time, being a three-time world champion.
I also receive regular guidance on dog fitness and injury prevention from Lowri Davies, who is widely considered to be one of the best dog sports vets in the world.
Whether you are glamping at Home Farm or just visiting from the surrounding area, you are welcome to my lessons on site. Here’s a summary of what I offer. Please see my contact details below to get in touch to discuss your and your dog’s requirements.
Pet Dog Training at Home Farm
1-to-1 Foundation Course
During the foundation course, I teach the topics that you absolutely must know in order to fully enjoy your relationship with your dog, allow others to enjoy your dog, and most importantly keep you and your dog safe. I generally run this course on a one-to-one basis, as it can be distracting for a dog to have other dogs in the class while it is learning these essential new skills.
Loose Lead Walking: Teaching the dog to walk without pulling on the lead
Recall: Teaching the dog to come back when it is called away from a variety of distractions
Not Jumping Up: Not to jump up on people who approach the owner or the owner themselves
Leave: To leave or avoid something or someone when told to do so
Stay: To remain in a position until released by the owner
Handling: How to teach the dog to accept being handled and examined
Interactive Play: How to play interactively with your dog. Often overlooked, this is the secret weapon of all good dog training, as it is the key ingredient for building a really powerful bond between owner and dog
Health & Nutrition: I advise you on the best ways to exercise your dog, as there is much more to it than just taking your dog for a walk every day. What to do to keep them fit & healthy and what is the healthiest diet for your dog.
There is a choice of two packages for my 1-to-1 Foundation Courses during your stay at Home Farm Glamping:
The Gold 1-to-1 Package includes:
Pre-Course Online Consultation
Prior to your arrival at Home Farm Glamping, I would suggest a week or two before, we will have a consultation ideally over Zoom, in which I’ll give you all the information necessary to get the most out of your upcoming course and go through all the equipment you should have for your dog’s training and well being. In addition, we’ll discuss dog welfare, how to select the best vet and have an in-depth look at the very best diet for your dog. This will also be an opportunity for you to talk about your dog and any specific training issues you may be having. This online consultation will be one and a half hours long.
3 x 2 hour Face to Face Training Sessions
It is entirely up to you how you take these sessions, but hypothetically if you were staying for two nights you could have one session on the day of arrival, one the next day and one on the day of departure. Alternatively, it is perfectly ok to have two sessions in one day, but I would suggest one in the morning and one in the afternoon to give your dog a bit of a break.
One Month’s Online Support
Following a total of 6 hours 1-to-1 training at Home Farm Glamping, you will receive a month’s online support in which I encourage you to send me as many videos as you like of your training progress. I will then give you feedback either by email or over the phone within 24 hours of receiving your videos. This is extremely helpful to correct any inaccuracies that may creep in and to keep you motivated to keep up with all the exercises I have taught you.
The cost of my Gold Package is £350
The Silver 1-to-1 Package includes:
3 x 2 hour Face to Face Training Sessions
As with the Gold Package, It is entirely up to you how you take these sessions, but hypothetically if you were staying for two nights you could have one session on the day of arrival, one the next day and one on the day of departure. Alternatively, it is perfectly ok to have two sessions in one day, but I would suggest one in the morning and one in the afternoon to give your dog a bit of a break.
With the Silver Package you get the same 1-to-1 training opportunity that you get with the Gold Package, but you don’t have the pre-course online consultation or the month-long online support after you finish the course.
The cost of my Silver Package is £240
Bespoke Pet Dog Lessons
You can of course just pay for an hour’s private lesson to work on anything that your dog needs. I price these at £45 per hour.
I charge any additional dogs added to this lesson at £5 extra per dog
Dog Agility at home farm
One of the great things about Home Farm Glamping is the competition standard outdoor agility ring in the next field along. If your dog already has some basic pet skills, then trying agility would be an ideal next step. Almost any size or breed of dog can do agility and with adjustments for young puppies and healthy older dogs, any age too.
Dog Agility Package of 3 x 1 hour Lessons
During your stay, having three one-hour lessons would give you an ideal taster of what agility offers and how much fun it is for both you and your dog. What I teach you in those lessons is very flexible, but a suggestion might be to work on introducing your dog to jumps and tunnels in the first two lessons and then in the third lesson we could work on weave poles and the start of contact training.
The cost of the Dog Agility Package is £120
Private Dog Agility Lessons
As with pet dog lessons, you can of course just book a private lesson for 1 hour and work on anything you would like, or be open to my suggestions.
I price these at £45 per hour. I charge any additional dogs added to this lesson at £5 extra per dog.
Interactive Play Workshop
Interactive play is the secret ingredient for building a fabulous bond with your dog. During this workshop I will teach you lots of really fun games to play with your dog, usually involving a tug toy. I will teach you why tug is king for play and why throwing a ball for your dog is not only not interactive, but can pose a big injury risk as well.
This workshop is 1 1/2 hours long, and the cost is £65
Dog Health & Fitness Workshop
This is invaluable for any active dog. First, you will learn about nutrition and then we will move on to how to warm up your dog before any strenuous exercise or dog sport. This is important even when just going for long walks. We will then do exercises on building core strength and proprioceptive awareness for your dog. We’ll finish the session with a cooldown and you will leave with a clear plan for how to keep your dog fit and healthy for the rest of his or her life.
This workshop is 1 1/2 hours long, and the cost is £65
All sessions are available to those staying on-site, as well as those visiting for the day from the surrounding area.
